艮李 猬 Ken Li Wei 艮李 猬
The music of Ken Li Wei is inspired by Change and has the purpose to bring Changes. It is a musical expression of the ancient I Ching (or Yijing), the Book of Changes, that stands at the origin of the essence of Chinese culture and Eastern wisdom.
“Ken” is an ancient character that stands for the principle of the Mountain. At the top of the Mountain, things come to a hold. They can go no further, this is the limit where a new transformation awaits. The Mountain is a Gate which is guarded by the Tiger.
Music should bring us to this site of calmness and inner transformation. At the Mountain site, there are the future Seeds that will bring forth something new because resting is eventually followed by movement.
“Li” is an ancient Chinese name which means reason and power. Laozi, the legendary founder of Taoism, is accredited as the founding father of the lineage. But even older is “Li” as the natural element mentioned in the I Ching, the Book of Changes that inspired Laozi to write the Dao De Jing.
Li is the element of Fire, the clinging and radiant power that brings clarity amidst the darkness. It enables us to become conscious, to generate understanding and to articulate our ideas. Contrary to cold logic, Li is the Light that brings warmth in ourselves and the world. It is master of the organ of the Heart and it manifests itself as the Sun. Within the fire of Li, we cling together as we rise anew from our own ashes, like the firebird known as the Phoenix. Likewise, music should bring clarity to our Heart and deepen our understanding so we may join together in a way true to nature.
“Wei” is phonetically read as “way” – the Way is known as Tao or Dao, the ancient tradition that existed before religions and politics. Through understanding and remembrance of the Bright Past, we can attune ourselves again with our true Fate which is interconnected with the spontaneous movement of the heavenly Tao.
“Wei” is also the word for the Hedgehog, the nocturnal animal that quietly devours pests like snails. Wei is working in the dark, hidden for the world. He is the new healing power, protected by his spines, he dissolves the hidden corruption that tears down the essence of life and brings disorder in the Tao on Earth.
